5 most interesting volcanoes in Iceland

We all know that Iceland is mostly popular because of many dormant and active volcanoes. Today I would like to present couple of the most interesting in my opinion.

The first one is Krafla. It lays in the north Iceland and it is surrounded by steaming vents boiling mud pools and bubbling hot springs which create unique views. Although the volcano is frequently active, it is a home to a coldwater lake that has a beautiful emerald color.

The next volcano I find really interesting is the Oarefajokull volcano. Its is located on the southeastern coast of Iceland. What makes it so unique and beautiful, you may ask. Well, the volcano is covered in a blindingly bright white glacier. From the top of the volcano you are able to see the coastal cliffs and the famous Black Sand Beach!

The next really beautiful volcano is the Askja volcano. You can reach it only by traversing Odadahraun-the largest lava field and volcanic desert in Iceland! Not only the journey to it is breathtaking but also the unforgettable views. The volcano boats two beautiful lakes which make a beautiful contrast between them and surrounding dark landscapes. One of the lakes is frozen most of the year while in the other you are able to bath due to the bubbling hot springs. The appearance of the volcano is so otherworldly that even NASA sends astronauts to prepare them for them lunar missions!

The next volcano is one of the most volatile of all volcanoes in Iceland-the Grímsvötn volcano. It is known to have erupted over 60 times throughout its history! The last time was in 2011. The explosion disrupted air travel for many days because of the thick smoke in the atmosphere. It is still active and can erupt any time

The last volcano I'd like to talk about is the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The eruption of the volcano in 2010 caused closing air travelling for over a week! It is considered dormant since then. It lies just to the west of Kalta and it is covered by a beautifully shining ice-cap

  1. I was in the UK for two days at a meeting when Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010. Thanks to it I had to cross the continent by train: Eurostar from London to Brussels, then from Brussels to Cologne, then to Berlin and finally to Warsaw. Took me almost two days.
