Can napping in the afternoon improve your memory and alertness?
Some people sleep in the afternoon either to catch up on lost sleep or to help them feel more alert after they wake up. Boris Johnson himself, favours a nap during his work day. Napping can give us more strenght but it depends on how long we want our nap to last. Short naps are great for increasing energy, longer naps are better for affective learning. Studies have shown that that those who nap for 30-90 minutes have a better condition than those who nap either for longer or longer, or who don't nap at all. Naps can help the brain to clean up and to replenish its energy stores. Although napping has many positive influences it is not recommended for people who suffer from insomnia, because they might make it harder to fall asleep.
From my experience naps can be helpful but they might cause some negative influences as well. After taking a short nap, I feel more strenght and energy but when it takes about over an hour, I feel even more tired than before taking a nep. Also, later on I find it more difficult to fall asleep at night, so in the morning I feel tired again and I fall into a vicious circle. After waking up I always drink coffe of energy drink so I avoid taking a nap during the day.

A tricky issue, it seems. Another important factor is when you nap: it's got to be early enough (not later than 4 p.m.) to let your body get tired again a go to sleep in the evening.
