 6 interesting facts about Iceland

Iceland is a very interesting, strange and mysterious island, but there are some facts you may have no idea about.
The first I'd like to mention is that Iceland was then last place on place to be settled by humans! It is known to be one of the youngest landmasses on the planet. It was discovered accidentally by the Vikings about 1,100 years ago.

Another interesting and unknown thing about Iceland is that many of its citizens believe in trolls and elves! All the fairytales have begun at the time of the Vikings and were passed down from generation to generation till nowadays

The next fact surely will make happy all the environmentalists. Iceland is one of the most eco-friendly country in the world! Almost all of the electricity in the country comes from renewable energy sources. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland won the Nordic Nature and Environment Prize in 2014.

Another interesting fact about Iceland is about the colors of its flag-red, white and blue. Red represents volcanic fires, white snow and ice and blue-the ocean.

You may know or not but the Northern Lights can be seen in Iceland from September to March! That's a really long period of time! Iceland is a spectacular destination to experience the Northern Lights. They appear when solar particles interact with the atmosphere with the Earth's magnetic field. Surrounded by white, shining snow and ice, you see a bright green, blue, purple on pink sky. Isn't that magical?

The last fact I'd like to talk about is that more than 60% citizens of Iceland live in Reykjavik. The capital although is small, has got many restaurants, cafes, bars and museums. It has got many advantages for example the rest of the country seems like an other world without civilization and creates an unique atmosphere!

  1. In some Scandinavian crime series I have watched there is a suggestion that Iceland is in many ways dependent on other northern countries, especially Norway. For example, their police force is helped by Norwegians. Is this true?
